Transport
Domestic flights. The main domestic airline is Thai Airways (tel: 0 2356 1111, 0 2288 7000; www.thaiairways.com), followed by Bangkok Airways (tel: 0 2270 6699 or 1771; www.bangkokair.com). Budget airlines are Nok Air (tel: 1318 or 0 2900 9955; www.nokair.com), Air Asia (tel: 0 2515 9999; www.airasia.com) and Orient Thai (tel: 0 2229 4260 or 1126; http://flyorientthai.com).
Ferries. The main ferries are from the mainland to the Gulf islands of Ko Samui, Ko Phangan and Ko Chang. Seatran Ferry (tel: 0 7725 1555, 0 2240 2582; www.seatranferry.com) from Donsak to Ko Samui runs 14 boats a day, 6am–7pm, with tickets at B130 for passengers, and B420 for a car with a driver. Koh Chang Ferry (tel: 0 3952 8288) runs from Laem Ngop to Ko Chang 6.30am–5pm. Passenger return tickets are B120, cars B150.
Trains. Thailand’s state railway (tel: 0 2222 0175, hotline: 1690; www.railway.co.th) is an efficient means of seeing the country, although for many routes, buses are quicker. Travel agents, hotel desks and the information office at the main (Hualamphong) railway station can advise you on timetables and fares. Bangkok’s main stations are: Hualamphong on Rama IV Road, for the north, east and northeast and for express trains to the south, and Thonburi on Bangkok Noi on Rod Fai Road, for the west and slower trains to the south.
Popular routes are Bangkok to Chiang Mai (8.30am–10pm, first class fare B593) and Bangkok to Ayutthaya (4.20am–10.25pm, first class fare B66).
Intercity coaches. Government buses are operated by the Transport Company Ltd (tel: 1490; www.transport.co.th). They are known locally as Bor Kor Sor (BKS), and have terminals at every town. Buy tickets (VIP, 1st and 2nd classes) at any BKS station or online from www.thaiticketmajor.com.
Popular routes include Bangkok to Phuket (14 hours) and Bangkok to Chiang Mai (11 hours).
Skytrain (BTS). The Bangkok Transit System (Tourist Information Centre: tel: 0 2617 7341, hotline: 0 2617 6000; www.bts.co.th) is an elevated train service, better known as Skytrain. Trains operate from 6am–midnight. Single-trip fares vary according to distance, starting at B15 and rising to B42. Self-service ticket machines are found at all station concourses. Tourists may find it useful to buy the unlimited ride 1-Day Pass (B130) or the 30-Day Adult Pass (which comes in four types: B405 for 15 rides, B625 for 25, B920 for 40 and B1,100 for 50). The 30-day pass should be added to a Rabbit Card, which you will need to purchase (B150). All are available at station counters.
Metro (MRT or subway). Bangkok’s metro line (Customer Relations: tel: 0 2624 5200) operates from 6am to midnight. Fares start at B16, increasing B2–3 every station, with a maximum fare of B42. You can buy passes with unlimited rides: the 1-Day Pass (B120), 3-Day Pass (B230), 30-Day Pass (B1,400) and the stored-value Adult Card (B230, includes a B50 deposit).
Taxis. Taxis in Bangkok are metered, air-conditioned and inexpensive. The flag fall is B35 for the first km, then B5.5–8 per kilometre, depending on distance travelled. If stuck in traffic, a small per-minute (usually B2) surcharge kicks in.
